We have published this guide from the EquiLing research project and in collaboration with the UAM-MIRCo Research Centre, the first of a series of resources to raise sociolinguistic awareness. The EquiLing research-action project aims to promote collaborative participation. We want to share the results of our research activities with society to encourage support for all those who, whether in formal or informal educational settings, in associations, or in diverse collectives, wish to promote a more inclusive and open model of linguistic citizenship. The aim of this exercise in open science for popular education is to focus on all those situations (which are very common but often go unnoticed) in which language plays a key role in creating and reproducing inequalities.
In an attempt to go further and address the inequitable situations to which we draw attention and share strategies and tools, we follow the method of conscientization proposed by Paulo Freire for education for social change. It advocates that knowledge and reflection be understood as a collaborative and dialogical practice. Therefore, it is a process of shared awareness that leads to action, and to facilitate this, we provide guidelines, recommendations, and a sequence of steps for conducting workshops in educational, work, or volunteer settings. The guide includes supporting materials such as worksheets, videos, a glossary, and a bibliography.
