Event description
The event was inaugurated by the Vice-Rector for Research and Libraries at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The center director, Luisa Martín-Rojo, as well as the secretary and some members of MIRCo’s steering committee and council, presented the theoretical tenets and the yearn for changes that inspire the center, its lines of research and commitments, and its plans for the future. Keynote researchers from the Scientific Committee (Ofelia García, Monica Heller, Ben Rampton, and Teun Van Dijk) discussed the challenges our societies face today and how research at MIRCo can contribute to overcoming them. The closing address was delivered by Elisa Loncón, a Mapuche linguist, indigenous rights activist, and president of the Constituent Commission of Chile.
With a trajectory of over two decades as a research group, the MIRCo research center is conceived of as a space for encounter, dialogue, and collaboration. It brings together networks of specialists from different countries around the world, with different languages and complementary fields (such as Linguistics, Communication, Anthropology, Social Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, and Biology) to carry out frontier research on multilingualism, discourse and communication. MIRCo addresses communicative, social, political, economic, cultural, identitary, and educational aspects.
